Asus Transformer Prime set to launch on the 18th

As we have mentioned previously, the Asus ‘Prime’ was set to launch sometime around this month. We were given an exact date by Asus recently. It will be launched on the 18th and around 2000 units will be available to buyers on that day.

We are pretty sure you tech enthusiasts already know whats in this tablet, but we feel like highlighting it once again. Below are the specs of the Prime:

  • 10.1″ LED Backlit screen with super IPS, Corning Gorilla glass
  • NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-core CPU
  • DDR2 1GB RAM
  • 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
  • 1.2MP (front camera), 8MP(rear camera) with flash
  • 2-in-1 audio jack (Headphones & Mic-in)
  • 12 hours, 25Wh, 18 hours with the additional 22Wh battery on the dock

We also have some additional info on the Prime that could make you want to buy this even more than you already do.

The Size

The prime is 8.3mm thick which is 0.3mm thinner than the Galaxy tab 10.1 and 0.5mm thinner than the iPad2. It weighs 586grams which is slightly heavier than the Galaxy because of its Aluminium case.

The Dock

The dock is also a 254mm chiclet keyboard, the same as the one on the 10″ Eee PC. It has a multi-touch touchpad just like the one you will find on the Zenbook series.

Performance

It’s NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU will deal with any kind of multi-tasking and gaming. It will also play full HD  movies and can be viewed on any HDTV by connecting it via its HDMI port. The port supports HDMI 1.4a version.

The Display

Having an IPS panel sets it far apart from other tablets, but this isn’t enough, is it? From what we heard, the Prime comes with a IPS+ Panel which offers even better color reproduction and has higher brightness level for outdoor usage. The panel is covered with a Corning Gorilla Glass with anti finger print. Forgive us if this is wrong, but as far as we know, this is the only tablet which comes with a anti-finger print glass, at least until the iPad 3 comes out. This is a feature that we were looking forward to for a very long time and hope to see on all devices with touch screen.

The Camera

Although this is a feature that you won’t really use on tablets,it is nice to know that it could be used when that time comes and you have to snap a photo of the person sitting opposite you, for some reason. The back-illuminated CMOS sensor and F2.4 will definitely produce some good photos. We did test the Prime’s camera a few weeks back and can safely confirm that the specs are not just some numbers, but work well in the real world.

The speaker

As we said earlier, there were suppose to be some real good speakers, with high bass and clarity at the back side of the Prime but Asus couldn’t make it because it produced more noise in the circuits inside the casing. However, they have still managed to fit some pretty good speakers into the Prime with Asus SonicMaster Technology. It promises precise processing protocols and codecs. The resonance chamber is also larger and is made from metal with high hardness.

If you are looking for a new tablet, this is something worth waiting for. The pricing isn’t confirmed, but would most probably be somewhere around RM2200. Asus has confirmed that the first batch would only be available in the Amethyst Gray color and the TranSleeve we were talking about on our previous post will also be available on the 18th.
